In 1977 the first text adventure game was created which set genre's to the gaming world. Throughout the early years, games were dominated by action. Games has to be "in your face" and capture the players imagination but after this became stale and developers created different genre's, changing the way games can be produced.
Everything was being improved. Games were getting better graphics, stories were being created and cut scenes were invented. Now, its common to see cut scenes but at the time, games were solely about playing a game with as much action as possible. The Atari 2600 showed this.
Also, multiplayer games were a new deal enableing more than one player to interact with the game and imerse themself with friends. Refering back to the Atari 2600, all games are one player only where some games require 2 controllers because of the limited amount of buttons.
All through the years, gaming companies experimented with their technology, pushing it to new limits and attempting to perfect it. For example, controllers started out with a joystick that later developed with buttons and analogue controllers that worsen over time. They also developed a D pad enableing the player to have more control over the game and not limiting the player to either horizontal or vertical movements.
AI was also being invented to give the player a challenge instead of numerous fork in the road that tended to repeat. At the present time, AI can react to the players every movement and react accordingly. It still isn't perfect but imagine Call of Duty campaigne with the enemy stood their not shooting but moving in random directions. It would seem weird. At the time it was classified as a game but as the years went by, technology was at an endless race to provide better graphics, better gameplay and better storyline.
Personally I believe the best era of gaming was when I was born in the 1990's where games has a fair challenge and players could begin to pick the level of difficulty depending on the skill of the player and gradually getting harder as the game progressed.
Games also began to be even more interactive with more than just a controller that were either succesfull accomplishments or failer experiments. One thing that astounded me was games began to be portable with the gameboy.
So technology was being forced introducing new and exiting ways to play games, capture the players attention but it wasn't always fun. Some games cranked up the difficulty to near impossible levels providing such frustration for the young generation with games that seem to be aimed to be a means of torture.
At the beginning of the era, games were primitive, simple means of entertainment but over the space of 10 years became more than just games. The better the game, the less time kids spent in the sun.
